have you got any tips for creating this style of fractal...I can't figure out what variables/variations to use?

Well, its a flipped disc with a spherical final transform
But the doubled up look of the tubes comes from 1 foo on the spherical/linear junk transforms

love the way some textures blend and create interesting depth. and it´s also very interesting how those grey bands interlace, one on top of the other, like real laces. congrats on this deviation!
